Drogheda Wheelers Vice-chairman Bernard Maguire is organising and hosting an upcoming charity cycle Rás Cabhrú. Cyclists will have a choice of two distances the 100km and 50km cycle. The routes will start at Drogheda port at the North Quay gate and take the coastal route, then on to Ardee and will finish back in Drogheda.

The charity cycle will begin at 10:00 (registration is at 09:00) outside the main port gates on North Quay. The estimated finishing time is 15:00. Participants can choose which route they will cycle, be it the 100km or 50km route. The cycle is open to everyone over the age of 18 and is a leisure event. This means that there’s no experience necessary, just have your own gear, bike and water for the charity cycle.

The cycle is open to a maximum of 300 participants. The application fee is €25 per person, this fee includes a goodie bag and refreshments at the end of the cycle.

Cyclists registered with a cycling club will already have insurance cover. For non-club cyclists an additional fee of approximately 60 cent will be applied on the morning of the event upon registration. On the morning of the event there will be stalls present in the area. Simply go to these stalls and register along with your fee of €25. For non-club members your fee will be €25.60 which includes insurance.

This event is a cycling Ireland approved event. The cycle will also be fully marshalled. This year’s proceeds will go to Drogheda Homeless Aid.

Barry Wins Inaugural Club Championship

11899910_10205630286491423_84796850693068905_nCongratulations to Barry Hughes who won Drogheda Wheelers’ first club championship race at Corkagh Park on Sunday morning. The 13 strong field produced some exciting racing with lots of attacks.

First to go clear was Colin O’Connor. He was joined by Lenny McManus and Andrew Watters with the break establishing a lead of 45 seconds at one stage. A trio of Barry Hughes, Brendan McEntee and Simon Jones bridged across to the breakaway and then went clear to contest the finish.

In the final sprint it was Barry who proved strongest winning by a couple of bike lengths from Brendan and Simon.

Many thanks to Gerry for his time today, and to all the riders who took part.

Club Championship Road Race 2015

Drogheda Wheelers Club Championship Road Race 2015 will take place this Sunday at Corkagh Park. First race will be a handicap 45 minute plus 1 lap race, and the second race will be a 1 hour + 1 lap championship race.

Riders should aim to be in Corkagh Park for 9:30 in order to be at the start line at 10 am. The weather on Sunday looks to be good, and it will be one of the last races of the year.

We would ask anyone who intends riding and has not already confirmed, to do so as soon as possible, so that groups and numbers can be organised in advance.

Also, there is a meeting on Monday night in the thatch in relation to the Charleville. All riders racing in Charleville need to attend.

Club Meeting

There will be a club meeting on Wednesday Aug 12th at 8 p.m. in the Thatch Bar. All our members, both leisure and racing, are urged to attend. The following items will be discussed:

  • Fundraising:
Our Race night is pencilled in for October 9th. It will be in all members interest to get involved now to ensure its success.
As it will be both a social and fundraising event, members are invited to make suggestions for persons to receive small presentations on the night to acknowledge their contributions to our club.
  • The Rás Cabhrú sportive
This event, organised by Benner Maguire for Drogheda Homeless Aid, is scheduled for September 6th. Club members are to be advised how they can be of assistance to him as without him and his trusted motorcycle, a lot of our activities may not have happened this year.
  • East Meath Cycle Tour:
This event, hosted by John Hynes and Larry Mc Grane in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, takes place on August 16th, and will also be in need of participants and help.
  • Charleville 2 Day Race:
Our final big racing trip of the season is to Charleville, North Cork in early September.
With two full teams of 5 riders now entered, we need to discuss the logistics and costs
    etc. of the trip.

Finally, members will have an opportunity to raise any other issues they wish to discuss.
