Off-road and in-form: Unforgettable Season for Ciara
Though primarily known for our many achievements in road cycling, Drogheda Wheelers also boasts many riders who regularly engage in off-road disciplines. This year, one young rider in particular has been grabbing headlines and putting the club in the spotlight with a series of impressive performances in both mountain biking and cyclocross.
12-year-old Ciara O’Connor has had a truly remarkable season. Participating in various cyclocross leagues, Ciara achieved numerous podium finsihes culminating in a memorable victory in the final round of the Leinster league, a result that secured an impressive second place overall. Ciara also claimed second position in the fiercely competitive Leinster cyclocross championships before transitioning to mountain biking at the beginning of this season. She took part in the Biking Blitz series, which consisted of seven rounds held at different trail centers across the country. After several more podiums, Ciara again achieved a superb victory in the final round amidst the captivating landscapes of the Slieve Bloom Mountains.
Ciara next took part in the cross-country Mountain Bike National Points Series. Demonstrating her skills and determination, she again secured podium placements in each round, ultimately winning the final round and securing another outstanding second-place finish in the overall National Points Series.
With her sights set on future successes, Ciara eagerly looks forward to the upcoming National Mountain Biking Championships in July, followed by the commencement of the Cyclocross season in September.
