Mark Mullen League 2018

Our annual Mark Mullen League begins on Monday 18th June. Racing will take place at 7:30 each Monday night for six weeks in total. Each race will be just over 6 laps of the Donore Circuit.

All races are run on a handicap basis and are an ideal opportunity for those who’ve never raced before but would like to give it a try. Anyone wishing to race must hold at least a Cycling Ireland Club competition license (club members who have non-competition licenses can upgrade by applying to Cycling Ireland).

Riders must ride in a minimum of 3 rounds to be eligible for overall prizes. Riders who ride all 6 rounds will have their best 5 results count.

Sign-on for each race will be outside Donore National School. The entry fee will be €5 per race, payable at sign-on. Competitors should note a slight change with regard to the race finish. This will be now be about 2km from the start line (as shown on the map below). As always, we ask all competitors and spectators to be mindful of the needs of local residents when parking on or near the circuit.

Rás Finish

After a grueling eight days, the 2018 Rás Tailteann ended with the traditional final stage into Skerries. Well done to Team Louth Jons SCME Dimplex on their participation. Congratulations especially to Arek Kluz, Barry Hughes and Niall Craven who are now “men of the Rás”. Our commiserations go to our other riders Cian Delaney and Paul Smith, who unfortunately had to retire after sustaining some nasty injuries earlier in the week. We wish Cian and Paul speedy recoveries.

Here’s a selection of photos from Sunday’s final stage..

Ras 2018 Team and Route Launch

The Thatch Bar Drogheda was the venue last Thursday night for the official launch of the 2018 Ras Tailteann as well the Louth Jons SCME Dimplex Ras team. Drogheda Wheelers secretary Gerard Campbell spoke about Drogheda’s strong Ras tradition, acknowledging the presence of several local Ras veterans among the enthusiastic audience. Others who spoke passionately about the event were Drogheda Wheelers chairman Andrew Watters, race director Eimear Dignam and Drogheda Mayor Pio Smith.

While the town has hosted stage finishes on a number of occasions, this will be the first time that Race start will take place in Drogheda. The Louth Jons SCME Dimplex Team includes two Drogheda Wheelers riders, Barry Hughes and Niall Craven. Barry competed in the event two years ago, but suffered appalling luck with two crashes in the first two stages, the injuries sustained forcing his retirement on stage three. This will be Niall’s first Ras. Despite suffering a broken shoulder and collar bone just weeks ago, Niall’s determination meant there was scarcely any doubt about his participation. Niall and Barry are joined by Waterford man Paul Smith. Two Stamullen riders, Cian Delaney and Arek Kluz complete the line-up. Their inclusion is a poignant reminder of the vital part played by the late Gabriel Howard in making this team a reality. Gerard Campbell spoke of Gaybo’s tireless contribution to the Ras over the years and said that the opening stage will be dedicated to his memory.
