Louth Coastal Tour

This year’s Louth Coastal Tour will take place on Sunday November 22nd. All funds raised will
once again go to the leukemia unit at St Vincent’s Ward in the Mater Hospital, where the late Neil Pyne was cared for so well over a fourteen month period. Neil passed away there in September aged just 26 years old. He was a super physio and, in the course of his work, made many great friends in the cycling community.

Registration will be in Drogheda Retail Park Security Offices from 9am with a start time of 10am.

Total distance is 80km and will be at a controlled speed. Guest leaders on the day will be Ireland’s number one ranked rider Sean Mc Kenna from the Aquablue team and also the new President of Cycling Ireland Ciaran Mc Kenna.

Race Night Reminder

We’d like to remind all members that our combined Race Night fundraiser and Members’ Social night will take place in the Thatch Bar on Friday 9th October. The race night is our most important fundraising event this year so it’s vital that we sell as many entries as possible: all members are asked to try and sell at least two horses at €30 each. It’s also important that any completed sponsorship cards are returned to the club as soon as possible. Fully (or indeed partially) completed cards can be given to any committee member or details sent to Seamus Domegan – sdomegan@eircom.net. It promises to be a very entertaining night and a great opportunity for all our leisure and race riders to get together.

Charleville 2 Day

There were some very good results from a 10 strong Drogheda Wheelers team who competed in the Charleville 2 Day stage race at the weekend. In the A3 category, club champion Barry Hughes had a very impressive 9th place finish on the 86km first stage. Barry was among an elite group of only 10 riders who finished more than three minutes clear of the peloton. Barry again finished in the leading group on the tough 91km final stage to finish 11th on General Classification.
In A4, Brendan McEntee finished in the points with a 7th place on stage 1 while Mark Lynch rode a very impressive Time Trial to finish 9th. Indeed, a consistent showing from the A4 team throughout, saw them finish 2nd overall in the team General Classification, just 01’20” behind winners De Ronde van Cork.

Barry Wins Inaugural Club Championship

11899910_10205630286491423_84796850693068905_nCongratulations to Barry Hughes who won Drogheda Wheelers’ first club championship race at Corkagh Park on Sunday morning. The 13 strong field produced some exciting racing with lots of attacks.

First to go clear was Colin O’Connor. He was joined by Lenny McManus and Andrew Watters with the break establishing a lead of 45 seconds at one stage. A trio of Barry Hughes, Brendan McEntee and Simon Jones bridged across to the breakaway and then went clear to contest the finish.

In the final sprint it was Barry who proved strongest winning by a couple of bike lengths from Brendan and Simon.

Many thanks to Gerry for his time today, and to all the riders who took part.
